Hi my lovely readers, I am back from my short vacation. For those reside in Malaysia, how was your long holiday? My holiday was ended with a happy note hence I hope yours’ are great too. Just after I landed in Malaysia, I was invited to the Flavours of Mexico in Malaysia at Impiana KLCC Hotel.

Expect an array of semi buffet style menu with apperizers, soup and desserts with a choice of main course prepared individually in the kitchen for best quality of food, serve with a free Margarita at “Flavours of Mexico”. I find that Mexican food is generally colorful in ingredients, and rich in flavours. The dishes have both a depth of flavours with its combination of savoury and earthy flavours including herbs and spices giving it its distinct kick of variety of chilies include fresh, dried, smoked and pickled, alongside garlic, onions, lemons and limes oregano, coriander, cinnamon and cocoa.
Let’s look into some of the menu available at “Flavours of Mexico” thatis prepare by Chef Ivan Chavarria Hernandez, an International experienced chef who has worked in famous restaurants like La Sucursal, Valencia and Spain to Motel Mexicola.


Appetizer

Our dinner kicked start with 3 varieties of starters, each of them are flavorful in their own way. I like Ensalada de jicamy y betabel en aderezo de tamarindo the most because I love the strong beetroot taste. A healthy starters with lots of vegetable for all of us.

Soup

Crema de frijol (Creamy bean soup)
A very rich and creamy bean soup, served with corn tortillas. According to the chef, this is a very traditional soup in Mexico. Honestly I am not a bean soup person but I finished the whole bowl by myself that night! Unbelievable to me, I do like the hot creamy bean soup they served here! Nice job on the soup.

Main

Pescado a la Veracruzana (Fish Fillet in Veracruz style simmered in tomato sauce, capers, olives and capsicum)
Fresh fish fillet cooked in traditional Mexican cooking style - Veracruz Style. The fish fillets are juicy, sweet and spicy, sour and salty. I love its addictive flavours and I finished the bowl of Mexican rice with it.

Dessert

Flan Traditional (Classic Mexican custard)
This is a very delicious dessert which tastes like a caramel pudding. I love they paired it with lotsa berries, sugar syrup and crispy sugar candy stick.

Finding a Balance in Digital Parenting

While children deserve the freedom to enjoy digital activities, there is a need to balance time spent on these through a ‘digital detox’. Given the multiscreen era that we are currently living in, it is unsurprising that learning how to ‘unplug’ is a test for most people, including children of today’s generation. With smartphones, tablets, laptops and gaming consoles within easy reach, gone are the days that we can leave the house without a device or two.

At a recent panel session organised by ZooMoo, a television channel for preschool children featuring animals, this topic along with the challenge of raising a child in the digital era was discussed. Keeping away from technology might not be feasible in today’s circumstances, however there are some ways for parents and children alike to balance their time spent on screens. 

Redefining the concept of balance

Most parents have an impression that if their child is watching TV or playing games, they are not getting any educational value as it is thought the primary purpose of these activities is purely for fun. However, as technology plays a big role in our lives, it is not about the removal but the mindfulness of using it. Instead of setting parameters on the amount of time allowed, the smarter approach is to know what content their child consumes and how they react to it. 

“Parents need to be the gatekeepers for their child’s time and activities spent on screens. Similar to any other activity such as play time, kids do not know when to stop and are likely to be upset when they are told to. It is about understanding your child and what works for them,” Dr. Shen-Li Lee, parenting expert and author of Brainchild stated.

During the session, a question on the effects of exposure to technology on a child’s social development was raised. Although current research doesn’t provide conclusive answer to whether or not there is a direct negative or positive impact on children, the main consensus is that consuming digital media in moderation is key.

“Screen time is not necessarily a bad thing as it can be used as an educational tool or part of bonding time. My girls and I enjoy watching ZooMoo and learning about the animals together,” said Aishah Sinclair, celebrity mom of two, radio DJ and ZooMoo brand ambassador.

Role model for healthy digital habits

Throughout the early years of development, one of the methods children will learn is through imitation. Watching their parents practice a well-balanced screen time routine will have a positive impact on children. Some examples include picking up a book to read, spending time outdoors, or even the simple action of putting away devices at the dinner table.

Relating to her personal experience, Aishahsaid “sometimes hiding the iPad from my girls does not work as they catch me using my mobile phone to answer urgent work emails. As parents, we need to ensure that we set good examples for our children to understand and emulate.” 


Content that matters

Restricting technology may not be the best way to navigate the digital space. Dr. Lee cited an example that although PC/video games are often associated with the negative effects they have on children, there is some underlying value for their development including problem-solving skills and creativity. In addition, depending on the type of game, they can also be exposed to real-life scenarios such as trading.
Similarly, ZooMoo’s approach to content aims to provide a safe environment for children to learn through animals and the world they live in. Through collaborations with child and educational experts, the content curated and format of programming is designed to entertain while stimulating young minds and bodies.

“As a channel that believes in the power of technology, we embrace it and encourage children to be exposed to it from a young age. It is not something that can be avoided as a child grows up and conditioning them in the proper use of technology early would be beneficial,” Catherine Nebauer, General Manager, ZooMoo Networks for Australasia said.

In this age of the digital world, there is no way to implement a total black-out on technology. Rather, like with any other activity, there is a suitable time and place, and it is up to parents to find ways to balance quality time both on-screen and off. 

The panel session was held at the newly opened Parenthood family park in Sunway Pyramid Mall, in conjunction with ZooMoo’s Big Day Out. Hundreds of participants took part in the many activities that was organised for families to bond and have a fun time. Parents and children were kept engaged throughout with puppet and origami workshops.

Get to Know Park Shin Hye - Mamonde’s Brand Ambassador

Mamonde Malaysia has introduced its brand ambassador Park Shin Hye through a greeting video, last July during its official launch. In the video, Park greeted everyone and congratulated Mamonde Malaysia on the launch of its first counter at Aeon 1Utama. Looking perky and cute in the video, Park also announced that she will be visiting Malaysia this October.

Born on 18 February 1990, Park has turned 26 this year. Her first acting debut was in 2003, in a drama called Stairway to Heaven, which earned her the Best Young Actress Award by SBS Drama Awards. Park’s career rose when she starred in the K-drama ‘The Heirs’ alongside Lee Min Ho, where she played Cha Eun-Sang. ‘The Heirs’ was a huge success in China with one billion views on Youku.com (a popular video viewing site in China) while Park had more than 11 million followers Weibo, the highest number followers for a Korean female actress. She was awarded the ‘Popular Foreign Actress Award’ at the Chinese Anhui Drama Awards. Park’s popularity continues to soar with her role as Choi In-ha in the drama Pinocchio which earned her Forbes Korea’s Top 40 Most Popular Celebrities. In the drama ‘Doctors’ that is currently airing on SBS, Park plays the female lead which makes her more popular than before. SBS expects to reach a 20 per cent viewership rating nationwide in the coming weeks with this drama gaining popularity. 
Park has won more than 23 drama and TV awards which also include the Prime Minister’s Award at the 6th Korean Popular Culture & ‘; Arts Awards and the Most Popular Actress (Film) at the 51st Baeksang Arts Awards in 2015.

Park has been the face of Mamonde since 2014. She was selected because of her pure beauty and her multiple talents that fit the brand’s image and also the brand message, ‘Inspired by Flowers’. The Mermaid is a film that tells the story of a playboy businessman (Deng Chao) who falls in love with a mermaid, Shan (Lin Yun) who was sent to assassinate him. Upon release, this film broke numerous box office records and it will premiere exclusively on CELESTIAL MOVIES (ASTRO Channel 322) on Sunday 2 October at 9pm!

1.      The Man Behind the film
·         It is a 2016 Chinese-Hong Kong science-fiction, fantasy, and romantic comedy that was directed, co-written, and co-produced by Stephen Chow. This is his tenth directorial effort.
2.      Popularity of the film
·         The Mermaidwas ranked as the No.1 Chinese movie with box office earnings of $7,025,381 in Malaysia and was also the highest-grossing film of all time in China!
3.      Inspiration of the film
·         Stephen Chow was inspired by Hans Christian Andersen's fairy tale of "The Little Mermaid" to produce this film and wanted make it a modern interpretation of the story. Another inspiration came from his childhood, where he lived by the sea and always wondered what life was like under the sea.   
4.      What Happened Behind-the-Scenes
·         Deng Chao and Lin Yun ended up eating a total of 150 roasted chickens during a multiple takes of an eating scene just to ensure they got the best quality shot.
5.      Moral of the story
·         Liu Xuan’s development project had a direct impact on the merpeople, killing many of them and he only managed to save Shan by sending her back to the ocean so she could escape from this. Learning from his mistakes, Xuan set up a scholarship for research on environmental protection.

It was a colorful morning last Sunday, where we seen up to 4,300 participants made their way to theSpirit of WIPRO Run 2016 at Perdana Botanical Garden (Lake Garden). Themed “Powered by Ambition”, the annual charity event Spirit of WIPRO Run marks its 6thyear in Malaysia with yet another successful event held concurrently with thousands of WIPRO employees, their family, friends, customers, partners and suppliers run together on the same day at different locations where WIPRO has its offices for a good cause. 
With the aim to foster the values that WIPRO UNZA considers to be the foundation of the company, “Spirit of WIPRO Run” is a CSR initiative to contribute to the society by encouraging systematic improvement in education and to the local communities where WIPRO operates in.

Spirit of WIPRO Run 2016 is free for WIPRO employees and their families, and the others only had to contribute RM 10 per person to participate in the run. They were given a running kit contains a running shirt, cap, and products from WIPRO in a drawstring bag.

Also seen there was a warm up session facilitated by the Nike Ambassador, tele-matches for families, CARRIE JUNIOR mascot appearance, and inflatable castles, fishing pond game, entertaining clown and game booths with prizes to win. Not only that, participants were also treated to a buffet and children were especially elated with the cotton candy and popcorns which were made available throughout the event.

All the kpops fans out there should know that the Running Man fame Song Ji Hyo has came to Malaysia for SHOOPEN grand opening last Saturday.

When we reached Fahrenheit 88 early morning that day, a lot of fans were waiting there already. She arrived the venue by a open top bus, and she waved to us from the bus. All of the fans screamed out loud when seeing her approaching.
Song Ji Hyo is very down to earth in person. She looks exactly the same in real person, and even more prettier than on the screen. Her skin is fair and smooth, can’t believe that she is in her mid 30’s already.

During the interview session, she answered the questions patiently with the help of the translator. She made a lot of cute expressions throughout the interview, we just love her cuteness to max!

I was born and raised in a Chinese ‘Kampung’ in Kepong. When I was young, I always followed my parents crossed to the opposite road to buy grocery and food. There was this SHELL Petrol kiosk right at the opposite road. As a small kid, I always curious about this big yellow logo and name, wondered what was it for and why the station was so big. One day, I decided to ask my mum what is that, and my mum told me it’s a Shell Petrol Kiosk, where we could fueled up our cars so that we could move longer.
Since then, whenever I think about fuel, I will think about Shell.

Diabetes is a common disease in Malaysia, the number of Diabetes patients have increased to 3.5 million or 17.5 per cent of its citizens affecting Malaysians as early as 18 years of age[1]. The increasing number of Diabetes disease is very worrying. I have seen my close relatives, friends and colleagues who are suffering from Diabetes. For example, one of my colleagues, has diagnosed with Type 2 Diabetes last year, his life has completely changed. He couldn’t works aggressively like how he did last time, and he gets tired easily hence he doesn’t have enough energy to take care of his 2 young sons. Indeed, he has to send his sons to child care every day. It is sad how Diabetes has affected one’s life, and how the situation get worsen from the amputation of legs escalating to other serious health complications.

It is important for us to take care of our daily intake of food, and exercise regularly to avoid Diabetes. Luckily, with the advancement of technology, Type 2 Diabetes patients have a new treatment choice for Diabetes.

In July 2016, AstraZeneca Sdn. Bhd. (AstraZeneca) launched its new combination drug, the once-daily xigduo™ XR (dapagliflozin+Metformin XR) tablet. Combining two anti-hyperglycaemic agents, Forxiga (dapagliflozin) and Metformin XR, xigduo™ XR helps to reduce glucose levels in the bloodstream and promote early glycaemic control among Malaysians with Type 2 Diabetes.

Let me tell you more about the new treatment for Type 2 Diabetes. Dapagliflozin is a Sodium-glucose co-transporter 2 (SGLT2) inhibitor with a 4-year efficacy data[2]that works to prevent glucose from being reabsorbed into the kidneys and to expel it from the body via urine[3]. Metformin, a commonly used first-line treatment for Type 2 Diabetes[4], helps to decrease glucose production in the liver and prevents glucose reabsorption in the intestines and improves insulin sensitivity[5]. In xigduo™ XR, the extended release Metformin formulation allows for a once-daily dose, which minimises common gastrointestinal (GI) side effects such as diarrhoea, nausea and stomach pain that are frequently associated with immediate release Metformin[6],[7].

Together, Dapagliflozin and Metformin deliver HbA1c reduction of 2%, alongside two additional benefits of weight loss and blood pressure reduction[8]. This in turn addresses the associated risk factors in developing cardiovascular issues among diabetes patients[9],[10]. A chronic metabolic disorder, Type 2 Diabetes is characterized by high glucose levels in the blood due to the body's inability to produce or properly respond to insulin[11]. It is a highly prevalent disease in Malaysia, affecting approximately 3.5 million adults1 (an increase from 2.6 million in 2011[12]) and rising. The Second Burden of Disease Study for Malaysia ranked diabetes as one of the biggest contributors to both disability adjusted life-years (DALY) and deaths in the country[13]. 

Let’s see what the experts have shared on their view of daily xigduo™ XR. Professor Dr. Chan Siew Pheng, Senior Consultant Endocrinologist said, "Diabetes requires a multifaceted approach in its management5. This often includes lifestyle modifications such as increased physical activity and nutritious diet, in combination with oral agents to attain glycaemic control5 where the dosage and/or types of medication are slowly adjusted over time[14]. This conventional treatment method may not be the most effective[15] as diabetes is a complex disease that is frequently accompanied by other health issues such as obesity, heart disease, stroke and hypertension5."

Professor Dr. Chan added “there is an urgent need for a more intensive and innovative initial treatment plan such as combination therapy to address diabetes at the earliest stage14to prevent its progression, complications and the development of associated cardiovascular risk factors."

 
In the same vein, Professor Mark E. Cooper, Deputy Director and Chief Scientific Officer of the Baker IDI Heart & Diabetes Institute in Australia said, "The main challenge for most Type 2 Diabetes patients is controlling their blood glucose levels3. Yet, only half of the people living with this disease are found to achieve the recommended HbA1c target3,[16]. This is partly because of non-compliance to their treatment plan, particularly among patients with multiple medications and frequent dosing throughout the day[17].

By initiating a combination therapy such as once-daily xigduo™ XR, patients can have a much simpler and more convenient way to manage this disease from the outset."

A survey involving 600 diabetic patients found that only 16.6% were adherent to the prescribed anti-diabetic drugs, demonstrating a demand for less number of medications to be taken daily17. Similar results were found in an earlier study, where patients with twice-and thrice-daily medications were more likely to skip dosages compared to those in the single-dosage group; thus highlighting the need for minimised daily doses to improve patient compliance[18].

The NIVEA Kejar Kerja Apprenticeship Program is the collaboration between FORWARD and NIVEA to provide a platform for girls to have the opportunity to discover and polish their skills, enhance their personal attributes and secure a career spot in various creative industries in Malaysia. This project is further cemented with WOMEN:girls as the on-ground partner that targets the specific apprentice group for the projected outcome. 

The best feature of this project is the actual engagement by the apprentices from the beginning of the recruitment day until the day they achieve the ultimate goal apart from obtaining inspiring inputs and empowerment attributes from NIVEA and FORWARD. NIVEA Kejar Kerja Apprenticeship Program targets girls as young as 18 years old who are living in Projek Perumahan Rakyat (PPR) around Klang Valley and Selangor. This provides a better pathway for them to venture into their desired creative industries as well as reducing the shortages in talents and critical skills gaps in Malaysia. These girls are mentored by renowned entrepreneurs such as Chef Adu from The Canteen, Boryeong Mud Facial Spa @ Nu Sentral, Baba Can Cook from Limapulo, Project B, Souka Bakes, and NIVEA top beauty adviser of NIVEA.

This program is also facilitated by the illustrious names such as Christopher Ling and Firdaus Nisha each with their own forté to be part of the development of success.

Diamonds are not stumbled upon, they have to be discovered. Hence, NIVEA Kejar Kerja Apprenticeship Program is structured to thoroughly search and surface potential apprentices through on-ground research and surveys prior to the phases of Recruitment, Orientation and Apprenticeship. This collaboration between NIVEA and FORWARD reaches out to 350 girls over five locations for the Recruitment phase over the span of ten days. The Orientation phase involves the shortlisted apprentices being prepped with the fundamentals of the apprenticeship of their choice in a training camp for this program.  

The crème de la crème among these apprentices will proceed to the next phase of the Apprenticeship after acing the interview with their mentors. The seven apprentices that makes it were featured in a media event of Apprentice Announcement Ceremony to announce their breakthrough in enrolling for the apprenticeship on 26th September 2016. 

NIVEA Kejar Kerja Apprenticeship Program covers weekly evaluation by the mentors with documentations of the apprenticeship process through videos of their journey and the testimonials from their mentor. Each apprentice is given a RM250 allowance every week during their apprenticeship. Upon completion of the final week of the NIVEA Kejar Kerja Apprenticeship Program, the successful apprentices will be channeled for possible job offers and are targeted to commence a successful employment opportunity in these organizations.

Hence, practicing safe sex plays an important role in making sure your soulmate feels safe and cared for.

As such, prevention through protected sex is always better than cure. Consistent use of condom provides substantial protection against the acquisition of many STIs, including statistically significant reduction of risk against HIV, chlamydia, gonorrhea, herpes, and syphilis.2, 3 & 4
